New Wrens! "Pulled Fences"

I'm terrible at updating this.

But anyway - The Wrens have decided they're bored with playing with other bands and barely-announced solo shows and just released their first new music since 2004's epic Meadowlands. "Pulled Fences" was recorded at Abbey Road live, and this is the first take of the first time the band had even heard the track... the fact that it's not trainwreck and actually pretty great makes it worth the $1. Definitely recommended. Pick it up here, Amazon or iTunes.

Please Dear God Let These Blade Runner 2 Rumors Be Fake

From the "OHGODNO" department: Slashfilm just posted a rumor that the writers of surely-hit-but-at-the-same-time-awful film Eagle Eye are tossing around ideas of writing Blade Runner 2.

If you haven't seen Blade Runner, it's probably one of the best pieces of sci-fi to ever be created, and there is absolutely no need for a sequel. I'll stop talking before I embarrass myself further.

Hey Hollywood, stop making sequels and remakes we don't need. Thanks.

Current addiction: Passion Pit's Chunk of Change EP. Suggested by my lovely lady (and, looking at my library, apparently yewknee's Untitled II mix as well, even though I didn't notice.)

Full of playful synths, squeltches, and yelps, it's a danceable good time. "Sleepyhead" goes from noisy to infectious before you've even noticed it happened.

Pick it up for $7 (only a small chunk of change) on iTunes.

I know I'm only entitled to one "sorry I haven't been updating this site" post at a time, so I won't say that.

I will say that summer 2008 happened so quickly that my head is slightly spinning that it's already over. Highlights!

Moving into a new (less crappy) apartment. Still not fancy by any means, but hey, we actually get our mail delivered, which is a nice plus.

howard and nester

One of my biggest memories of being a kid was that of Nintendo Power. Every month, a new issue would come in the mail full of information about games I loved, games I wanted, but mostly games I'd never even play. It didn't really matter - I would devour the thing, pour over ever page and remember the best tips and cheats for anything that interested me.

Early in the magazine's run, since game graphics weren't all that impressive blown up, most of the pictures were drawings done in-house, including great comics on specific games. Howard and Nester was a regular feature in the magazine, starring Howard Phillips, the president of the Nintendo Fun Club, and Nester, a sort-of mascot for the magazine.

I'd completely forgotten about these until I came upon the Howard and Nester Comics Archive. Sadly, the comics pretty much ended when Howard quit working at Nintendo, and Nester has pretty much been forgotten since then.

Anyway, a great little nugget of forgotten childhood. I have a feeling I'm going to be busy for awhile.

Yes, another 80s kids franchise from childhood is about to be turned into a big-budget hollywood summer action movie. no big surprise really - Transformers was huge, why not go with Hasbro's other 80s success?

I hadn't really heard much about this since it was announced, but I just randomly looked at the IMDB page for it and the casting is a bit surprising.

Ray Park as Snake Eyes sounds just about perfect, Sienna Miller as The Baroness .. sure why not.
And possibly even more perfect - Mr. Eko as Heavy Duty. Sold.

But only if Heavy Duty gets to carry around a huge stick with scriptures written on it.

Oh yeah, and Lost's season debut is tonight. I'm going to have to leave work early, I'm thinking.

Vampire Weekend

I'll admit that the past few months, I've grown pretty numb to most new and upcoming music, just because all too often it feels like hype bands never live up to their name.

While I'll won't say they are the best new band out there, I will say that what I've heard from New York-based Vampire Weekend makes for some relaxingly enjoyable pop. Seriously, I dare you not to smile during the video for their new single, "A-Punk."
